Funeral services for Carmelita Scelfo Mire will be held Thursday, December 7, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Centerville during a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Father Michael Champagne, CJC will be the Celebrant for the Mass with Father Ruben Primor concelebrating. Following the Mass, she will be laid to rest in the St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeffrey Gates, Jonathon Koob, David Giraud, Carl Carline Jr., Terry McMillan, Al Giraud, Danny Scelfo, and Norris Simon.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, December 6, at Ibert’s Mortuary from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 7 p.m., led by her sister, Darlene. Visitations will resume Thursday morning at the church beginning at 9 a.m.
Carmelita, who was affectionately called Ern to those close to her, was born in Franklin on November 4, 1960, the youngest of five children born to the late Camille “Tut” Scelfo and Gladys Lovell Scelfo, and passed away peacefully at the age of 57 on Sunday, December 3, 2017, at Franklin Foundation Hospital. She was a longtime employee of St. Mary Bank and Regions Bank. She enjoyed trips to casinos, cooking for family and friends, and could out-fish everyone in her family. She loved holidays and spending time with family, as well as following her grandson, the apple of her eye, to watch him play baseball. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Those she leaves to cherish her memory include her husband of nearly 38 years, Michael Mire; her son, Scott Mire and his wife Nicole; her grandson, Logan Mire; her mother, Gladys Lovell Scelfo; two sisters, Darlene Scelfo and Monica S. Carline and her husband Carl; brothers-in-law, Danny Mire and his wife Sue, John Mire and his wife Debbie, and David Mire and his wife Cindy; sisters-in-law, Monique M. McMillan and her husband Terry, Minette M. Giraud and her husband Al, Diane M. Nix and her husband Mike, and Maria M. Cole and her husband Ronnie; nieces, Sara J. Gates and her husband David Lorah, Lacy C. Koob and her husband Jonathon, and Liz Giraud; nephews, Jeffrey Gates and his wife Heather and David Giraud; grandniece, Amber Gates; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, and family members.
She was preceded in death by her father, Camille “Tut” Scelfo; her sister, Jane S. Gates; her brother, Michael Scelfo; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Owen and Lee Ann Mire; and special friend who was like a sister, Rosemary “Penny” Thibodaux.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Franklin Foundation Hospital, Dr. Roland Degeyter, and Dr. Kristi Prejeant, for the love and compassion shown to Carmelita and her family during this difficult time.
