New role, opportunity at Young Memorial

Infinite possibilities for a tailored degree or certification will now be available to residents of Morgan City as a result of the Young Memorial campus of South Central Louisiana Technical College realigning with Southeast Louisiana Community College.
The realignment of the Young Memorial campus of SCLTC will go into effect July 1. The realigning will be a slow transition that will take an estimated 12 months to complete. The process is slow to make sure that academic accreditation is correct and staff and current students are not affected.
“For any existing student, we are going to do a teach-out,” said Earl Meador, director of South Central Louisiana Technical College. “Current students are not impacted with any changes until 2019. Existing students have two years to finish with no changes to curriculum or price.”
Some of the workplace programs will transition in July, but academic programs will continue on to the end of June 2018.
Southeast Louisiana Community College will offer four general education courses this summer on the Young Memorial campus starting June 6. Credit from these courses can be used toward an associate degree and transferable to a four-year university.
“There is going to be more opportunities for (current) students and more opportunities for new students,” said Meador.
Courses between the colleges will become interchangeable. For instance, a student at SLCC will be able to take courses in air conditioning and refrigeration at SCLTC as an elective.
“It’s our first initiative to kick off the realignment in Morgan City,” said Christine Payton, communications and marketing director of Southeast Louisiana Community College.
Currently, the Hugh and Byrnes Young Foundation’s Summer Scholars program is sponsoring 50 Morgan City residents to take a summer course offered at Young Memorial campus for free.
Two other campuses of SCLTC will realign with other community colleges in the state with the same goal of opportunity expansion. The Lafourche campus will realign with Fletcher Technical Community College, and the Reserve campus will realign with River Parishes Community College.
