Vermilion Catholic rallies to upset Central Catholic, 11-6
Fifth-ranked Vermilion Catholic rallied to upset second-ranked Central Catholic, 11-6, in District 7-1A softball action in Bayou Vista Tuesday.
In a battle of top-five Division IV teams, Vermilion Catholic trailed 6-3 after three innings.
However, the visitors and defending Division IV state runner-up scored eight unanswered runs for the win. Vermilion Catholic scored a run in the fourth, three each in the fifth and sixth innings and another in the top of the seventh.
The loss snaps a six-game Central Catholic winning streak.
Sara Thomas suffered the loss. In 4.2 innings, she surrendered five earned runs on nine hits.
Taylor Picou led Central Catholic with a 1-for-4 performance with a triple and two RBIs, while Bailee Lipari was 2-for-4 with a run.
Central Catholic (15-3 overall, 5-1 in district) will return to action Thursday when it hosts Gueydan in league play. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
Morgan City eased by Assumption, 10-4, Tuesday in Napoleonville in a matchup of top-five teams in Class 4A.
Morgan City, ranked No. 1 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A power rankings, led 2-1 after an inning before breaking the game open with three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings for a 8-1 advantage.
The Lady Tigers extended their lead to 9-1 in the top of the fifth before Assumption, ranked fifth in the LHSAA power rankings, cut its deficit to 9-3 in the bottom of the frame.
Morgan City scored a run in the sixth, and Assumption played one in the bottom of the seventh.
Morgan City outhit Assumption 10-3.
Kennedy Hebert led Morgan City on the mound and at the plate. The Nicholls State signee tossed a complete-game three-hitter to earn the win. In seven innings, she surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks, two hit batters and 10 strikeouts.
Offensively, Hebert finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, four RBIs and three runs. Other top Morgan City offensive contributors were Gracie Verrett, 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs; Allie Vincent, 3-for-4, four runs and three stolen bases; McKenzi Smith, 1-for-4, a triple; Haylie Crappell, two RBIs; and Hannah Prado, an RBI.
Morgan City (11-3 overall, 1-0 in district) will return to action Thursday when it hosts E.D. White in district play. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
Berwick falls to
Defending Class 3A state champion North Vermilion routed Berwick, 12-2, in District 8-3A action in Berwick Tuesday.
No individual stats were available for Berwick, which had its five-game winning streak snapped.
Berwick (8-9, 2-3) will continue district play Thursday when it hosts Erath at 4 p.m.
