MCHS upsets Assumption, 6-4
The Morgan City High School Tigers concluded District 7-4A action with a 6-4 upset of Assumption.
Morgan City entered the game ranked No. 25 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A power rankings, while Assumption is ranked No. 10.
In Thursday’s contest, each team scored a run in the first, while Morgan City plated a run in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 lead.
After Assumption tied the score at 2 in the top of the third, Morgan City later scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-2 advantage.
Each team scored a run in the sixth, while Assumption plated a run in the top of the seventh.
Morgan City outhit Assumption, 8-4, while the Tigers overcame five errors for the win. Assumption had one miscue.
Morrquise Charles led Morgan City on the mound and at the plate.
He earned the win as he surrendered four runs (none earned) on four hits with three walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts in seven innings.
Offensively, Charles was 3-for-3, with a double, a home run, four RBIs and a run. Other top Morgan City offensive contributors were Caleb Landry, 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Mitchell Mancuso, 2-for-3, a stolen base and two runs.
Morgan City (15-18 overall, 7-5 in district) will conclude its regular season Friday when it hosts Dunham in nondistrict action.
CCHS falls to
Vermilion Catholic upset Central Catholic, 12-5, in nondistrict action in Abbeville Thursday.
Central Catholic entered the game ranked No. 8 in the latest Division IV power rankings, while Vermilion Catholic is ranked No. 15.
Vermilion Catholic scored a run in the first two in the second and four in the third for a 7-0 lead.
Central Catholic scored five in the fourth to cut its deficit to 7-5 but could get no closer as Vermilion Catholic scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-5 advantage.
Vermilion Catholic outhit Central Catholic, 14-5.
Bryce Grizzaffi suffered the loss. In 2.2 innings, he surrendered seven runs (seven earned) on nine hits with three walks and fanned five.
Offensively, Luke Barbier and Grizzaffi led Central Catholic. Barbier finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, while Grizzaffi was 1-for-4 with a double. Other top Central Catholic offensive contributors were Nathan Hebb, 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run, and Brooks Thomas, an RBI.
Central Catholic (18-10) will conclude its regular season Friday when it travels to face Patterson in a 5 p.m. nondistrict contest.
