Youth baseball, softball sign-ups set

From Staff Reports

Local youth baseball and softball sign dates have been set for youngsters in Patterson, Berwick, Bayou Vista, Amelia and Bayou L’Ourse.

In Patterson, signups for baseball, softball and T-ball will be held Monday through March 1 and March 5-8 at the Patterson Area Civic Center. Signups will be taken from 5-7 p.m.

New to the Patterson programs this year will be a switch of girls’ softball from Dixie Youth play to Babe Ruth play.

The move was made because other communities in the region are affiliated with Babe Ruth.

Because of their affiliation, all-star squads will be eligible for regional and state tournament play.

If there are enough teams, officials said they will offer girls softball for ages 13-14 and 15-16.

The move to Babe Ruth also means that coaches have to be certified, something that board member Harold Ganaway said shouldn’t be much of a problem to achieve.

Tryouts for baseball will be held March 12, while softball tryouts will be held March 19, both at 6 p.m. at Kemper Williams Park near Patterson.

Opening ceremonies will he held March 24 and will feature a baseball tournament and a fundraiser raffle.

In Berwick and Bayou Vista, St. Mary Central Dixie Youth baseball signups will begin Monday and continue each weeknight through March 8. Signups will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the Berwick Civic Complex.

To be eligible, youngsters must be 5 years of age on May 1 and no older than 12 on April 30.

Registration will be $30 per child and $20 for additional children from the same family.

Tryouts will be held March 10.

A coaches’ meeting will be held March 5 at the Berwick Civic Center at 7 p.m. for anyone wishing to coach in the league.

In Amelia, baseball, softball and T-ball callouts will be held at the Amelia Recreation Center for youngsters in Amelia and Bayou L’Ourse.

Registration is being held now through March 6 at the recreation department between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Those ages 4 to 6 will participate in T-ball, while boys ages 7-15 will participate in baseball and girls of the same age will participate in softball.

For more information, call the Amelia Recreation Center at 631-2032.

Also, the Teche Tigers 11U baseball team will hold open tryouts on March 2 at Complex Park in Morgan City.

Those trying out for the squad must be 11 years old or younger on May 1.

Tryouts will be held at 6 p.m. at the park, located on Victor II Boulevard.

Former Morgan City High School baseball coach Tim Hymel will coach the squad.
