Westgate turns back Franklin Hornets

NEW IBERIA _ A strong second half surge enabled the Westgate Tigers to post a 31-7 victory over the Franklin Hornets here Thursday at Lloyd G. Porter Memorial Stadium.

Westgate quarterback Aaron Byrd directed four scoring drives as the Tigers recovered from a 7-0 deficit replacing it with a 24-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.

One of Franklin’s brightest moments came when running back Brian Robertson raced 37 yards for a touchdown at the 7:42 mark of the first quarter. Brandon McFarlane added the extra point, giving FSHS a 7-0 advantage. Robertson’s heroic act sent the Hornets ahead of the Tigers by a 7-0 margin early in the first period.

Byrd quickly rallied his troops with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Broderick Broussard along with a 27-yard field goal. Sandwiched in between the two scores, Westgate’s St. Julien raced 17 yards for a touchdown helping the Westgate Tigers build a 16-7 halftime cushion.

In the fourth quarter, Westgate’s Ramon David scored on a 36-yard punt return before tacking on the two-point conversion sending the Tigers outfront by a 24-7 margin. Trevor Davis later returned a fumble recovery into a 35-yard touchdown before Byrd booted the extra point.

Franklin managed to force a pair of turnovers but wasn’t able to capitalize.

Franklin’s David Kinchen twice snuffed out a drive by Westgate with both a fumble recovery along with an interception.

Franklin’s dynamic duo of Brian Robertson and Brandon McFarlane took turns churning huge chunks of real estate. Robertson finished with seven carries for 78 yards and one touchdown. McFarlane carried 16 times for 62 yards on the night. FSHS quarterback Jarion Brown finished with 20 carries for 23 yards.

Brown connected on 8 of 13 passes for 72 yards and one interception. Westgate’s Aaron Byrd went 12 of 21 for 108 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Brennan Robinson led the Hornets in receiving with three catches for 47 yards while Allen Randle caught two passes for 20 yards and Simieon Theodile hauled in a pair of passes for 11 yards.

Franklin (0-2) will prepare to battle McMain on Friday in its 2013 home opener at J. C. Dry Stadium.
