West St. Mary’s Wells and Lyons share Outstanding Field honor in regional meet

BATON ROUGE _ West St. Mary’s Gentrell Wells and Gerrianna Lyons shared Outstanding Field honors in the Class 2A, Region II Meet held Tuesday at Episcopal High School.

Wells won the javelin (126-9) and the discus (114-2) while also finishing in the runnerup spot in the shot put (32-10 ½).

Lyons won the shot put with a throw of 36-9 ¼ and placed fifth in the discus.

West St. Mary’s relay unit of Naishaylyn Brown, Ja’azha Scott, Jamiah Vincent and Rhaya Marks posted a second place finish in the 4x200 meter relay with a 1:51.36 reading. WSM’s 4x100 meter relay team of Brown, Scott, Vincent and Marks placed third in their event with a 52.95 time.

Brown also earned a second place finish in the 100 with a time of 13.06.

Episcopal of Baton Rouge won the Class 2A, Region 2 Girls title with 126.50 points. Northeast was second with 83 points with the West St. Mary Lady Wolfpack earning a third place finish with 75 points. Rounding out the scoring were: East Beauregard (48); Catholic High of New Iberia (47); University (37); Runnels (29); Delcambre (27.50); Vinton (24); DeQuincy (14); Lake Arthur (10.50); Pickering (8); Kinder, Capitol (8); Welsh (4.50); Jeanerette (4); Dunham, Rosepine (2).

In the boys’ meet, West St. Mary’s Kyler Jackson won the 110 meter hurdles (15.79) while also qualifying for the upcoming state meet with a second place finish in the 300 hurdles (42.89). West St. Mary’s other state qualifyer was Peterson Edwards, who was third in the 200 meters (23.06).

University won the boys title with 96 points while Episcopal was second with 77 points. Delcambre finished third with 58 points ahead of Northeast with 55 points. Rounding out the Class 2A, Region 2 totals: 5. Catholic High of New Iberia, 46; 6. Loreauville, 40; 7. West St. Mary, 30; 8. Dunham, 29; 9. Pickering, 27.50; 10. Lake Arthur, 26; 11. Kinder, 16. 12. East Beauregard, 14; 13. DeQunicy, 12; 14. Jeanerette, 11; 15. Runnels, 8; 16. Vinton, 7; 17. Rosepine, 4. 18. Welsh, 1.50.

The top three finishers in each event advance to the state track and field meet at LSU next week.
