Weekend volleyball games called off due to storm

The torrential rain that caused the cancellation of Patterson’s football game on Friday also caused several area volleyball teams to cancel games and draw out of tournaments.

Morgan City played its first two games of the Assumption tournament on Thursday but didn’t return for Saturday’s games. Central Catholic cancelled its home game against Thibodaux on Saturday and Berwick withdrew from the Wood-lawn tournament.

On Thursday, the Lady Tigers lost 2-1 (25-17, 21-25,16-18) to New Iberia in the first game of the Lady Mustangs tour-nament at Assumption.

Katelyn Adams led the way with seven assists, two aces, two digs and four kills; Reina Fernandez had three digs, an ace and an assist; Brittney Durham had five aces and four digs; Kailyn Turner had seven kills, two blocks and two block as-sists; and Marilynn Bailey had two kills and an assist.

In the second game, MCHS took on St. Amant and lost 2-0 (11-25, 18-25).

Taylor Prince led the team in the second game with two assists and a dig; Adams had an ace, three assists, three kills and two digs; Fernandez had an ace, a dig, a kill and an assist; and Turner had two kills and a dig.

The Lady Tigers (0-3) will host Patterson (1-0) tonight with the first game set for 4:30 p.m. and varsity starting at ap-proximately 6 p.m.

Lady Eagles fall on the road

Central Catholic’s volleyball team took on the Episcopal School of Acadiana on Thursday in a rematch of the state semi-finals from 2010.

ESA came out on top again winning 3-1 (20-25, 11-25, 25-19, 18-25) over the Lady Eagles. It was a tough two game stretch to start the season for CCHS with Assumption in the season opener, which they won.

Caroline Byrne led the team with 27 assists; Maria Templet had 15 digs and a kill; Celine Flores had 10 kills and five digs; Abbie Bergeron had three digs; Amanda Barron had two aces and a kill; Brienna Hill had two kills and a block; Ger-alyn Garrett had six kills and three blocks; Kimberly Russo had two digs; Meo Knight had 11 kills, one blocks and three digs; and Olivia Crawford had five digs.

Central Catholic (1-1) will travel to face Ellender tonight at 4 p.m.

Lumberjills beat Centerville in opener

The Patterson volleyball team picked up 3-0 win (25-16, 25-12, 25-9) to start its season against Centerville.

The Lumberjills were led by Chynna Williams with three kills, two aces and a dig; Kaylan Johnson had two kills, five aces and four assists; Katelyn Sonnier had a kill and two digs; Jessica Decuir had two kills, one ace and a dig; Caitlyn Fontenot had four aces; Carissa Fontenot had two aces; Rachel Easley had an ace; Keisha Kinchen had two aces and a dig; and Kasey Stratton had an ace.

The Patterson junior varsity also came away with a win 2-0 (25-8, 25-13).

Berwick falls at HLB

The Lady Panthers started the season on the road with a loss to HLB, (3-0 8-25, 15-25, 16-25).

Sara Aucoin led Berwick (0-1) with nine kills, six digs and two blocks; Abigail Ohlin had nine digs; and Morgan Mitchell had eight digs.

Berwick withdrew from the Woodlawn tournament this past weekend due to weather conditions but they will host Centerville (0-1) today at 4 p.m.
