Weekend tourneys set

Local basketball teams will be participating in two tournaments this weekend as the 2011 Panther Invitational at Berwick Junior and Berwick High schools, as well as the Tournament on the Teche at Centerville High School both kick off Thursday and run through Saturday.

In Berwick, girls’ squads from Patterson, Morgan City, Berwick and Central Catholic will participate, as well as boys’ squads from Patterson, Central Catholic and Berwick.

Other participating girls’ teams are Grand Isle, Thibodaux, Sarah Reed and Catholic High N.I., while boys’ squads from Jeanerette and Grand Isle will participate.

The first games will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Thursday when Patterson and Grand Isle face each other in girls’ action at Berwick Junior High, while nearby at Berwick High, girls’ squads from Central Catholic and Morgan City will square off in another 3:30 p.m. matchup.

At 5 p.m., girls’ squads from Thibodaux and Catholic High-New Iberia will battle at Berwick Junior High, while boys’ action will begin at Berwick High, where Patterson will face Central Catholic at 5 p.m..

The first day’s action will conclude with a 6:30 p.m. boys’ matchup between Jeanerette and Berwick.

On Friday girls’ action will continue with games beginning at 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Berwick Junior High, while at Berwick High, Sara Reed will face Berwick’s girls’ squad at 3:30 p.m.

Boys’ matchups between Grand Isle and Jeanerette (5 p.m.) and Patterson and Berwick (6:30 p.m.) will follow at Berwick High.

On Saturday, more girls’ action will be held with games at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., all at Berwick Junior High, while at Berwick High, boys’ action will be held all day, beginning at 10 a.m. with Central Catholic facing Berwick. At 11:30 a.m., Patterson will face Grand Isle, while at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively, Jeanerette and Central Catholic, and Grand Isle and Berwick will square off.

In Centerville, the Tournament on the Teche will see the Morgan City boys’ squad compete at 8 p.m. on Thursday against Franklin High.

On Friday, the Tigers will return to action with a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Loreauville, while the team will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. game against Centerville.

All games will be held in the school’s new gym.
