VOLLEYBALL: Lady Eagles win district and earn bye in first round of playoffs

The Central Catholic volleyball team beat district rival Houma Christian on Thursday to clinch the District 5 championship.

The 3-1 (25-27, 18-25, 25-10, 25-21) win is redemption for the Lady Eagles’ only loss in district play.

Caroline Byrne led the team with 26 assists, a dig and two aces; Celine Flores had 10 digs, two aces, a block and five kills; Kaitlyn Gros had five digs and an ace; Abbie Bergeron had 12 digs; Amanda Barron had nine kills and four blocks; Geralyn Garrett had three kills and three blocks; Maria Templet had four digs and an ace; Meo Knight had 10 kills, four blocks and four digs; and Olivia Crawford had four digs and an ace.

The Lady Eagles are seeded No. 3 in the Division V bracket. They will face the winner of No. 14 First Baptist Christian and No. 19 Ecole Classique in the regional round set for Nov. 7.

MCHS wraps up district with win

The Morgan City volleyball team beat South Lafourche 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-12) on Thursday in the last game of district play.

Katelyn Adams led the Lady Tigers with 13 assists, three digs, two kills, five aces and a block assist; Brooke Singleton had 12 assists, 12 kills, a dig and three aces; Brittney Durham had 12 digs and two aces; Savannah Loupe had five aces and two digs; Allie Dragna had four digs and an ace; Genesis Esteban had three assists, a block and two digs; Reina Fernandez had 10 digs, three kills and a block assist; Kailyn Turner had six kills, a dig and a block assist; and Jaivienna Jones had five kills, a block and a block assist.

The MCHS junior varsity lost 2-0 (14-25, 22-25).

Layne Reynaud led the team with seven assists and a dig; Marilynn Bailey had six kills, six digs, a block assist and an ace; Loupe had 16 digs and an ace; Chandler Pasqua had eight digs and three kills; Elizabeth Esteban had three digs and a kill; Tyler Hebert had a kill and a dig; Taylor Prince had four assists, two digs and a kill; and Kloe’ Liner had a kill, a block assist and a dig.

The MCHS freshmen won 2-0 (25-16, 25-10).

Celestina Williams had six aces, five digs and two kills; Elizabeth Businelle had nine assists, five kills, a dig and an ace; Brandi Ingram had six aces, three kills and four digs; LeeAnne Price had two aces and a dig; Madison Pennison had two aces; Hebert had eight digs and four kills; Kellee Bandemere had two kills; and Sky Acosta had a dig.

Morgan City is the No. 16 seed in the Division IV bracket and will host No. 17 Edna Karr on Thursday. The winner will face No. 1 seed St. Thomas More in the regionals.

Berwick headed to the playoffs

Berwick was seeded at No. 19 in the Division III bracket and will travel to face No. 14 Haynes Academy on Thursday. The winner will take on No. 3 St. Louis.
