Volleyball bi-district playoffs: BHS, MCHS start tonight; CCHS has bye

By: Staff Reports
Tonight marks the start of the volleyball postseason and three area teams have made the cut.

Central Catholic is the No. 3 seed in Division V and has a first round bye, but Berwick and Morgan City will both hit the court in tonight’s bi-district round.

Berwick will hit the road to face Haynes Academy (18-6) in Metairie at 6 p.m.

The Lady Panthers (13-20) won three of their last four district games for a late boost in the power rankings for a No. 19 seed.

Haynes Academy is the No. 14 seed and has lost just once in its last 10 games including in tournament play against larger schools like Helen Cox and Bonnabel.

Berwick coach Charlotte Menard has the Lady Panthers much improved in her second year in charge of the team. Last season they were the No. 23 seed and lost to Northlake Christian in the first round, but this season the matchup is much better against the runner up from District 9, Division III.

Haynes Academy’s only losses in district came against district champions Ben Franklin. They also lost in the first round last season as a No. 19 seed.

In Division IV, Morgan City is the No. 16 seed and will host No. 17 Edna Karr (11-10) at 5:30 p.m. today.

The Lady Tigers (16-21) lost to Assumption in the regionals last season and has most of the nucleus back this season with the potential to make a deep run in the bracket.

Consistency has been an issue all year long for the Lady Tigers, but MCHS has played 16 more games and, as hosts, should be able to move on tonight.

Much like last season, the regional round would pit the winner against a tough opponent. This year it will be St. Thomas More, the No. 1 seed.

Central Catholic awaits the winner of No. 14 First Baptist Christian and No. 19 Ecole Classique in the regional round.
