Toys for Tots drop boxes placed; concert Dec. 6

The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment, is conducting its annual “Toys For Tots” drive. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.

The St. Mary Detachment has been actively organizing, fundraising, and distributing for the “Toys For Tots” program for 38 years. The Toys For Tots campaign kicks off in early October with a fundraising BBQ and Benefit Drive. Once the kickoff is held, volunteers begin distributing drop boxes across St. Mary Parish. New and unwrapped presents can be dropped in the boxes where the toys will be collected and given to children in our parish.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, The Marine Corps League Band will visit the Morgan City Auditorium for their annual Christmas concert starting promptly at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public; however, we ask that a new, unwrapped toy be donated at the door. Monetary donations will also be gladly accepted at this event.

To receive presents through this program, adults can sign up children at St. Mary Outreach on First Street in Morgan City; or for the western side of the parish, at the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce in Franklin near the courthouse. All children are entered into a special database that ensures privacy for the family and reduces risk of multiple filings on any child.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, 8 a.m. to noon, adults can pick up toys at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4222 at 1504 Sandra St. in Morgan City. Adults must present their ID and their coded ticket for pickup. Also, no exchanges are allowed on pick-up day.

Drop boxes remain in their locations until the first of the New Year. Any additional collections will be used the following year. Last year, the St. Mary Detachment was able to purchase and give out 5,286 toys to 1,864 needy children in St. Mary Parish and lower St. Martin Parish.

Drop boxes are located throughout St. Mary Parish for convenience. Drop off a new and unwrapped toy at any location. Monetary donations can be mailed to Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 1383, Morgan City, LA, 70381.
