Toys for Tots continues to accept donations

MORGAN CITY, La. -- The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment, is conducting its annual Toys for Tots drive with a mission of collecting new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December to distribute as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.

The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a shiny new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to needy youngsters that will motivate them to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders, according to a news release from Bill Goessl, Toys for Tots chairman.

The St. Mary Detachment has been involved in Toys for Tots for 38 years.

The Toys for Tots campaign kicked off our year with the Fundraising Barbecue and Benefit Drive on Oct. 27. Besides raising money, more than four boxes of toys were collected.

The Marines also participated in the first Toys for Tots Bingo Game at Cypress Bayou Casino on Nov. 18. For a $10 donation of a toy or money, a player received a chance to win $1,500. More than five boxes of toys were collected at the event.

On Thursday, the Marine Corps Reserve Band will visit the Patterson Civic Center for their annual Christmas Concert starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free to the public; however, those attending are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to be donated at the door. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Volunteers have set out the donation drop boxes throughout St. Mary Parish. New and unwrapped presents can be dropped in the boxes where the toys will be collected and given to children in our parish.

Friday was the deadline to apply to recieve a gift through Toys for Tots.

On Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon, adults can pick up the toys at their designated locations. If they registered at St. Mary Outreach, toys will be at VFW Post 4222 at 1504 Sandra St. in Morgan City. If they registered at St. Mary Chamber of Commerce, toys will be at the same location at the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce Office at 600 Main St. in Franklin. Adults must present their identification and their coded ticket for pickup. Also, no exchanges are allowed on pick up day.

Drop boxes remain in their locations until after the first of the New Year. Any additional collections will be used the following year. Last year, the Marines were able to purchase and give out 5,067 toys to 1,635 needy children in St. Mary Parish and lower St. Martin Parish.
