Top grads announced at West St. Mary

West St. Mary High School announces its top graduates for the 2012-13 school term — Becka Renee’ Caro, Alexis Nicole Cross, Megan Elizabeth Arton and Hayley Hiles.

Commencement exercises are at 6 p.m. tonight in the school’s gymnasium.

Becka Renee’ Caro is the daughter of Tony and Michelle Caro. She has two older sisters, Telah Robison and Shayna Hines, one younger brother, Tony C. Caro, and an older brother, the late Javis Caro.

She lives in Charenton and attended Mary Hines Elementary School from kindergarten to fifth grade, and was Student of the Year at the school. She then moved on to B. Edward Boudreaux Middle School and completed sixth through eighth grade at the top of her class throughout all of junior high.

After she graduated junior high Caro moved on to West St. Mary High School where she earned the top position in her class with a cumulative GPA of 3.900.

Throughout her years in school, she has earned numerous awards including: Math Excellence Awards, Principal’s List, Gold Card recipient, Trailblazer representative, State Literary Rally, Talented Theatre, Word Millionaire (three times, and double Word Millionaire her senior year) and was selected this year to be a St. Mary Parish Shining Star.

She also received her letterman jacket for academics in her junior year. Throughout her life she had done numerous community projects with her church both in her home state and in Mexico.

Caro will be attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the fall majoring in chemical engineering as an honor student on academic scholarships. Her favorite things to do are read, write poetry and participate in theatre. She says, “I hope to one day make my mark on this world, and be a positive, productive citizen in my community.”

Alexis Nicole Cross is the daughter of Jason Sr. and Shelbra Cross of Baldwin. Alexis will graduate with a 3.8889 cumulative GPA.

She serves as the 2012-2013 Student of the Year, 2012 Homecoming Queen, president of the Future Business Leaders of America Club and captain of the Lady Wolfpack Basketball team. Academically she excelled as a participant in the Gifted Program, National Honor Society, District Rally Team and the French Club.

She has also been a member of the Lady Wolfpack basketball and softball teams for four years and has garnered All-District honors in both sports.

Cross has been a cheerleader for the past three years and played volleyball for two years. She is the recipient of the Wendel C. Henry Scholarship, the TOPS Performance Award and Southern University’s Honor College Scholarship. Alexis aspires to attend Southern University with a concentration in nursing so that she may one day fulfill her dreams of becoming a pediatric nurse.

Megan Elizabeth Arton, is the daughter of David and Pamela Arton of Jeanerette. She is a midterm graduate from West St. Mary High School maintaining a 3.8393 cumulative GPA.

Finishing high school in December, she decided to work at First National Bank of Jeanerette until she furthers her education in the fall. She will be attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she will study to become either an ultrasound technician or a registered nurse. During her high school years, she enjoyed math and science classes along with the elective in allied health. During the summer she plans on working and traveling with family and friends. She says, “I enjoyed my high school years and am very optimistic about the college years to come.”

Hayley Hiles, a resident of Baldwin and daughter of Denise Bodin and Tim Hiles, will graduate with a 3.7833 cumulative GPA and will attend Fletcher Technical Community College to major in business office systems and accounting.

At West St. Mary, she was a member of the volleyball and softball teams. She was also an active member of the National Honor Society, Renaissance, Literary Rally Team, French Club, 4-H Club, and was a Student of the Year nominee. Honors include First Team All-District for pitching in the softball season of 2012 and the year of 2013 Academic All-State Award for volleyball and softball.
