Entering the first round of the Division II boys soccer playoffs, Morgan City soccer coach Jorge Hernandez said his squad needed to play better defense.
After Friday night’s 4-0 win against district foe South Terrebonne in the first round of the playoffs, Hernandez said he got what he wanted.
The Morgan City defense kept South Terrebonne scoreless by more than just the solid play of goalie Taylor Mayon, too.
While Mayon recorded multiple saves, the squad also got solid play from its entire defense, who formed a wall to stop a penalty kick by South Terrebonne’s Matt Benoit in the first half.
Mayon also made a save early in the second half when he knocked a South Terrebonne shot over the crossbar to prevent a goal.
“We practiced pretty well for this game and we got the results,” Hernandez said. “So that’s pretty good.”
In the first half, South Terrebonne’s defense gave up one goal to Sergize Flores in the 21st minute.
The Gators still maintained the defensive effort even though its senior leader, Britt Pellegrin, rolled his ankle during warm-ups, forcing South Terrebonne coach Archie Adams to play two freshmen.
“He’s my quarterback of the soccer team,” Adams said of Pellegrin. “He doesn’t play a minute. That’s no excuse, (but) it hurts, because now I have to move people around.”
In the second half, the Tigers began to pull away, as Victor Cerritos scored a goal from 25 yards out after he bounced the ball off his chest and volleyed it into the goal in the 53rd minute.
In the 68th minute, Oscar Hinojosa scored on a header from a corner, and in the 74th minute, Tyler Jones added another goal off a header that was set up by Cerritos’ corner kick.
“They communicate well,” Adams said of Morgan City. “They pass well.”
Despite the win, Morgan City suffered a key loss for the rest of the game early in the second half when Victor Calderon suffered a leg injury and had to be helped off the field.
He later was taken to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City for X-rays.
Morgan City will return to action Thursday when they travel to Lafayette to face Teurlings Catholic, the No. 5 seed, in the second round of the playoffs. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Clark Field.
