Tigers, Lady Tigers begin bi-regional play Monday

Staff Report

The Morgan City Tigers and Lady Tigers bowling teams will begin play in the state’s western bi-regional round of the playoffs Monday at Creole Lanes in Houma.

They will be joined at the event by teams from Shreveport, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Morgan City and Houma regions who all advanced out of regional play.

The Morgan City Tigers are the top seed and will receive a bye in first round action.

They will face the winner of No. 8 seed Lafayette and No. 9 seed Terrebonne at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Lafayette finished the regular season with a 5-4 mark, while Terrebonne recorded a 7-4 mark.

Lafayette’s top bowlers are Jeremy Hardeman with a 172 average, Brett House with a 157 average and Austin Gaspard with a 155 average.

Terrebonne’s top bowlers include Tom Dzornowski with a 193 average, Zachary Zanca and Alexander Zanca with 174 averages and Brett Soignet with a 165 average.

Morgan City features four bowlers who averaged better than a 200 game. The group is led by Chandler Delaune, who has a 210 average, while Austin Courtney and Taylor Brocato averaged games of 209 and Ryan Veillon averaged a 201 game. Lang Bui is not far behind with a 194 average.

Other teams in Morgan City’s bracket all vying for a shot at the state semifinals, also known as the Final Four, are No. 5 seed Vandebilt Catholic and No. 12 seed Comeaux, who will face each other at 11:30 a.m.

The winner of that matchup will face No. 4 seed Airline (11-1), who received a first-round bye.

The winner of Morgan City’s bi-regional will advance to the Final Four, along with the winner of a second western bi-regional, also being played at Creole Lanes Monday.

The winner of Morgan City’s bi-regional will play the winner of an eastern bi-regional featuring No. 2 Central — B.R., No. 7 Baker, No. 3 Broadmoor and No. 6 Denham Springs.

In girls’ action, Morgan City, who finished 2-9 at the end of the regular season before winning three straight in the Houma/Morgan City regional last week, will face No. 2 seed Airline, who is 10-0 on the season.

Morgan City is led by Kristi Wright, whose 134 average led Morgan City at the end of the regular season.

Airline will counter with Gabrielle Delecia and Sarah McComic, who ended the regular season with averages of 169 and 165, respectively.

The winner of the Morgan City/Airline matchup will face the winner of the No. 6 Lafayette and No. 3 Comeaux matchup.

Earlier this month, Lafayette, the defending state champion, was forced to forfeit four matches after the school violated the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's medical evaluation policy, according to a ruling issued by the LHSAA. Of the four matches forfeited following the self-reported violation included two wins against Comeaux High School.

Besides the Morgan City High School teams, the Tri-City area will send Berwick’s Devon Quick and Carl Reed to bi-regionals in boys' singles action as well as Elle Arcemont and Lauran Delco of Berwick on the girls’ side and Central Catholic’s Jada Pennison.

The group advanced to bi-regionals based on the averages of their last match at regionals, whether it was a team match their squad lost or a singles’ competition after their teams were eliminated.

Pennison finished the regular season with an average of 132, while Arcemont averaged 171 and Delco, 136, throughout the season.

However, during regional play, Pennison averaged a 156, while Arcemont had a 217 average and Delco, a 127 average.

Quick averaged a 204 during the season and 202 at regionals. Reed averaged a 181 average during the season and a 183 average at regionals.
