Stewart, Norwood shine on track

Former standouts from Central Catholic and Morgan City have begun their indoor seasons on a positive note.

Nia Stewart, who prepped at Central Catholic, won the 55-meter dash at the McNeese State Indoor I Invitational this past weekend in a school-record 7.12 seconds.

She also competed in the long jump where she turned in a jump of 19 feet, 2½ inches, good enough for third place.

Norwood, a former Morgan City High standout, was a part of South Plains College’s first-place 4x400-meter relay at the Texas Tech Masked Rider Open in Lubbock, Texas, during the weekend. The relay finished in 3:07.55.

He also won the 600-yard run at the meet in 1:09.86.

In her action, Stewart ran an identical 7.12 in preliminaries for the top qualifying time for the finals at the McNeese meet.

In the finals, Stewart’s 7.12-second finish beat out second-place finisher Courtney Henry of Dilliard, who turned in a time of 7.27 seconds.

In the long jump, Stewart finished behind University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Stacy Imagbe and McNeese State’s Jasmine Cornelius.

Norwood ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay for South Plains. He was joined by teammates Dakarie McKinnie, Daniel Harper and Anthonio Mascoll.

The squad easily beat second-place finisher Wayland Baptist, who turned in a time of 3:10.68, while Texas Tech finished third with a time of 3:11.84.

In the 600-yard run, Norwood edged Mascoll for the top spot. Mascoll clocked in with a time of 1:09.93.

South Plains took the top five spots in the event at the meet and seven out of the top 10.

Norwood’s performance comes one weekend after he won the 600-yard dash at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock.

Norwood won the event with a time of 1:10.04, almost a second ahead of Wayland Baptist’s Durawn Howard, who finished with a time of 1:10.92.
