Stewart earns another All-American honor
HOUSTON — Houston freshman Trevon Stewart, a former Patterson High standout, was named a Freshman All-American Monday by the Football Writers Association of America.
The true freshman free safety led all freshmen nationally and was 13th regardless of class with 126 tackles.
Stewart was one of two Conference USA players named to the team, joined by Marshall punter Tyler Williams.
The All-American designation is Stewart's second as he previously was named Freshman All-American by Sporting News.
Stewart took over as Houston’s starting free safety in the third game of the season and ended the year with 10 consecutive starts. He finished second on the squad and fourth in Conference USA with 126 stops, which was also the second-best tackle total of all defensive backs nationally.
Stewart had six games with at least 10 tackles including a career-best 21 stops at East Carolina.
In the season’s final game against Tulane, Stewart recorded his career first interception to go along with his seven passes broken up on the year.
Stewart also posted 3.5 tackles for loss for 13 yards, including a 10-yard sack against the University of Texas-El Paso.
