Steam plant units holding city for now

Work on the transformer in the wake of an explosive fire at the Joseph J. Cefalu Sr. Municipal Steam Plant Tuesday is ongoing and expected to be completed over the weekend.

In the meantime, Units 3 and 4 at the city’s steam plant will continue to handle electricity demands in the city, Morgan City Mayor Tim Matte said

“The (steam generators) were able to handle 41 megawatts of demand Thursday,” he said. “There were no problems there.”

He said the city is still working on the replacement transformer, paying special attention to the transformer switch and terminal connections.

“We will continue to work on the (reserve) transformer to ready it for loading through today and possibly into tomorrow,” Matte said. “But the urgency is less since (the steam generators) are carrying the load. But we need this up and running, so we will work on it throughout the weekend.”

The mayor also said Unit 3 at the steam plant is fully functional and operating at capacity.

“The unit itself was not damaged in the fire,” he said. “We were worried about an exciter being damaged, but now, it is operating as it should.”
