Police: Man booked after death of woman hostage
HOUMA, La. (AP) — A Thibodaux man, out on bond for simple robbery, allegedly shot a 22-year-old woman during a hostage-taking that also involved her 1-year-old son, Houma Police said Friday. The woman later died.
Police said Skylleur Hayes, 22, was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder about 3½ hours after the standoff began at a public housing complex apartment.
Hayes was hiding in the apartment's attic. Authorities said officers used tear gas before charging in to subdue him.
Officers had responded to a 911 call Friday morning. Gunfire was heard inside the apartment just before noon. When officers entered the apartment, they found the woman, who was believed to have had a relationship with Hayes, with a gunshot wound to the head. Her name has not been released.
Just before they entered the apartment, police were seen carrying a young boy who appeared unharmed away from the apartment. Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis said negotiators had succeeded in getting Hayes to let the child go.
Hayes has outstanding warrants in Lafourche Parish for a probation violation and in Terrebonne for simple robbery, police said. He was free on a $100,000 bond in connection with the latter charge.
Houma-Terrebonne Housing Authority Executive Director Wayne Thibodeaux said police told him the suspect has a relationship with the woman he was holding hostage.
