Lafourche voters OK jail tax
THIBODAUX (AP) — Lafourche voters have approved a sales tax to build a new parish jail.
Saturday’s vote was 58 percent in favor to 42 percent against, according to complete but unofficial results.
Sheriff Craig Webre said the 0.2 percent sales tax will pay for construction and operation of a 600-bed, $30 million jail to replace the current one, which officials and consultants have for years said is overcrowded and outdated.
Taxpayers will now pay 8.2 percent sales tax in Thibodaux, 8.9 percent in North Lafourche outside of Thibodaux and 9.4 percent in south Lafourche. The state average for sales tax is 8.89 percent.
