St. Mary Central 12U loses to Moss Bluff in 5 innings
After a pair of weekend games where the St. Mary Central 12U bats were on fire, the team was unable to score a run Monday afternoon and lost to Moss Bluff 10-0 in five innings. The loss evened St. Mary Central’s record to 2-2 at the Majors South Regional in Sulphur. A third victory in Sulphur would have placed SMC in a three-team playoff for the championship.
“We ran into a team that knows baseball and we have to tip our hat to them,” St. Mary Central coach Ronnie Ratcliff said.
The loss ended what Ratcliff described as a good summer for a team that had “kids with a lot of character and confidence.”
“We ended up 6-2 for the summer, district champions, made it to the regionals and played some outstanding ball,” Ratcliff said.
The tournament directors and umpires voted to award the sportsmanship trophy to St. Mary Central. The trophy was presented to the team after the game.
“You hate to lose out, but you have to understand what this game is about, which is to show respect, character and keep your head above water,” Ratcliff said as he talked about the award. “I am very proud of the players and their parents.”
Moss Bluff, 4-0 in the tournament, took the lead in its half of the first inning on a solo home run and expanded the lead to 6-0 as it scored five more runs in the second on five hits (four singles, one double) and an error.
After a scoreless third inning, Moss Bluff scored a single run on a pair of doubles in the fourth before ending the game by the 10-run rule in the fifth with three more runs on a double, single, two walks and an error.
Adam Askew started on the mound for St. Mary Central, going two innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with no walks and no strike outs.
Mitchell Frederick came in and pitched three innings, giving up four runs (two earned), on four hits, three walks, one hit batter while striking out four.
St. Mary Central was held to one hit by Moss Bluff pitching, a single by Zeph Hoffpauir in the top of the third inning.
St. Mary Central ended up third in the regional going 2-2, with both losses being to Moss Bluff, the only undefeated team remaining in the tourney. Moss Bluff will play Harahan today for the championship. Harahan would have to beat Harahan twice in the double elimination tournament.
