St. Mary AARP praises worker, offers membership

EDITOR’S NOTE — This is the last in a series of three articles submitted by the officers and board members of St. Mary AARP about its membership drive.

The St. Mary AARP board of directors would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and we hope that 2012 is your best year ever. We are also looking to 2012 to be our best.

We have the opportunity to do more for this community than we have ever done before. With newly elected officers and board members plus eager volunteers along with our many commercial sponsors, we will make this our best year ever. We would also like to invite all of you to become an involved member. We can always use more help, so don’t be bashful, join our ever growing troop of volunteers.

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight one of our newly elected officers, treasurer Ann Lombardo.

Last year, Lombardo served temporarily as recording secretary. She was elected treasurer in November 2011 for a two-year term. Being treasurer is just not enough for Lombardo. She will continue to sponsor the St. Mary Players Troupe which performs one-act plays every other month at the St. Mary AARP meetings.

Meetings are held the first Monday of each month, exception on holidays.

The troupe has 10 plays under its belt to date and is currently working on number 11. Plays are written by Bob Clements and directed by Lombardo.

Most people would stop there but not Lombardo. This year she will be reviving the St. Mary AARP choir which will also be performing every other month. She is always looking for new talent, so if you are interested, contact her at the next meeting.

For the last two years, Lombardo has been staging the annual Mardi Gras Court and Ball. The next presentation will be Saturday.

The ball will feature music by Morgan Blanchard and a complete buffet. Because of Lombardo’s efforts, this event is sold out.

Managing her time like a pro, she still finds time to spend at our area nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. She helps them acquire health and beauty aids, celebrate birthday parties and sponsors fund drives which provides much-needed cash to these facilities.

We all thank Lombardo for her involvement and contributions to St. Mary AARP.

We would like to remind everyone of the following:

—First Monday of the month, meeting and meal; second Tuesday of the month, senior meal; every Wednesday Bingo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; last Monday of the month, chapter meal at different local restaurants; and monthly Saturday night dances, featuring live music from 7-11 p.m.

—Classes are also available in social dance, line dancing and drama plus the exercise room is open to all members from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

All of us at St. Mary AARP invite you to join our family and become an AARP member for the next two years.

It’s easy and costs $10 for per person (both spouses must join and one needs to be at least 50 years young). Dues increase to $12 after Jan. 31, so sign-up now.

Payments can be made to St. Mary AARP, P.O. Box 3171, Morgan City, La. 70381 or call us at 985-384-2277.

With your help, we can continue helping others.
