St. Mary AARP membership drive until Jan. 31

EDITOR’S NOTE — This is the second in a series of three articles submitted by the officers and board members of St. Mary AARP about its membership drive.

Jane Aucoin and Joe Pizzuto are the “new kids on the block” since this is their first time to be elected to serve the nearly 3,000 members of St. Mary AARP Chapter 4435.

Aucoin will record minutes of the general membership meeting which are held the first Monday of each month and also the minutes of the board meeting which are held the first Wednesday of each month.

She will be assisting in various positions on the 44 committees that operate the local chapter and urges all her friends to consider being a part of this senior citizen organization. She reminds readers that we never get involved in politics or endorsements.

If you are 50 years or older, consider joining St. Mary AARP by mailing in your dues, with your spouse’s name, address, city, state and zip, along with all birthdays and anniversaries. We need your mailing address or email in order to send you a newsletter each month.

Pizzuto was elected corresponding secretary and will be responsible for publishing all St. Mary AARP news articles. He and his wife, Pat, have been assisting the decorating committee made up of Linda Darce and Pat Fryer and together they decorated the entire building, inside and out, for Christmas.

Pizzuto also enjoys handing out winnings at our Wednesday bingo games. We play 10 games from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with lunch at noon. All money collected is paid back to winners, so come join the fun. Hamburger and hot dog combos are only $3 each and it’s a perfect “bingo meal.”

Pizzuto and Aucoin are responsible for the newest addition to the senior center, “the physical fitness exercise area.”

Laborde Physical Therapy Center of Morgan City has donated 12 pieces of exercise equipment that range from treadmills to stationary bikes and more. We now offer five-day-a-week access (9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) to this facility at no charge (a $10 per month donation can be made which goes to our repair fund).

“We are the new ones on the board, but we see this organization as very functional and the only improvement would be new memberships,” Pizzuto and Aucoin said.

Send your membership fees ($10 per person for 2 years) to St. Mary AARP, P.O. Box 3171, Morgan City, LA 70381. Dues increase to $12 and $24 after Jan. 31, so sign-up now.

Include your mailing address (with self-addressed envelope, if possible, so we can send your new membership card and merchants discount list). Newsletters are mailed every month to keep everyone informed of the AARP activities.

Our goal is to provide good times and fun for all seniors of this area. “Come on over and pass a good time.”
