St. Mary AARP has ‘Independence Day’ meeting

The St. Mary AARP “Independence Day” meeting was a huge success, said AARP officials. Sponsoring the meeting was St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert who thanked everyone for attending and said “(He) was glad to help St. Mary AARP in any way he could.”

More than 300 members were treated to a dinner of red beans and rice, sausage, salad and bread. The meal was prepared by the AARP team of Jerry and Linda Fabre, and Gene and Mary Gaudet. Serving the meal was members of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

St. Mary AARP board of directors expressed special thanks to member volunteers and invites other members to explore their culinary talents.

Birthdays and anniversaries for July were celebrated with cake provided by M C Bank and coffee compliments of MidSouth Bank.

Anytime Fitness representative Stephanie Collins addressed the membership and offered everyone in attendance a seven-day free pass to the health club.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by Les Danseurs de Bonne Terre, a senior dance troupe. The dancers performed three dance routines.

The meeting ended with $25 given to a lucky contributor to St. Mary Outreach and numerous door prizes were won by members.

The next St. Mary AARP meeting will be Aug. 6. Dance music, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., will be provided by Hubert Francis. Bingo will be played from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting.

The AARP board asks members attending the August meeting to bring a canned good or make a cash contribution to St. Mary Outreach. All contributors are eligible for a $25 drawing at the end of the meeting.
