St. Mary’s Maj. Gary Driskell named Deputy of the Year

Maj. Gary Driskell of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office was recognized as the Deputy of the Year at the Marine Corps League St. Mary Detachment 600 annual law enforcement appreciation banquet.

The event serves to honor local outstanding law enforcement officers for their contributions to their agencies and the community.

The banquet was held at American Legion Post 242 in Patterson on Aug. 14.

After graduating from Morgan City High School in 1986 Driskell joined the United States Army serving actively until 1990. He then joined the reserve and was called up for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. During his military career he worked as a military police officer and reached the rank of sergeant.

Driskell joined the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1990 assigned to the parish jail. Since then Driskell has, in his words, done a little bit of everything. He worked his way up through the ranks. Driskell was promoted to supervisor in each division he was assigned, the jail, patrol, narcotics and detectives. Driskell never shies away from responsibility and meets each challenge set before him without complaint.

Today, Driskell oversees myriad operations. Along with managing the technology division and academy training, he directs the patrol, detectives, narcotics, juvenile and court divisions under the sheriff and chief deputy. He also manages the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Morgan City branch.

Driskell has two daughters, ages 19 and 12, and a stepson, age 16. He and his family attend Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City.

Driskell says helping others is the highlight of his job. While the focus of every investigation is to catch the criminal, his sense of accomplishment comes from giving victims peace of mind.

Looking forward, his goal is to keep teaching. Driskell wants to continue to share his experience and knowledge with those who are willing to learn.
