SMP superintendent is Lafayette candidate

St. Mary School Superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard is one of 26 candidates for the position of Lafayette Parish Superintendent.

Aguillard’s name has been passed among Lafayette Parish school administrators for several months as a strong candidate for the position, according to published reports.

Aguillard said his decision to apply for the position is a personal one.

“I spent the vast majority of my career working in Lafayette Parish … it is one of those opportunities to get back into Lafayette Parish. The opportunity was too great to pass up.”

“My decision to seek the position in Lafayette Parish has nothing to do with the circumstances in St. Mary Parish. It is a chance to go back to a parish that I consider home.”

Aguillard has 28 years of school system experience in Lafayette Parish, including 17 years in administrative positions in Lafayette Parish.

He was the director of Management Information Systems for the Lafayette Parish School Board, the area director for the Carencro-Northside geographical area of Lafayette Parish, assistant principal for Acadiana High School, principal at Carencro High School and a classroom teacher for about 10 years.

He has served as St. Mary superintendent since April 2004.

“I currently have a great job in St. Mary Parish,” he said. “(I have) an incredibly supportive community, a top-notch board and a professional staff that is second to none. We have very effective programs throughout the parish and have made tremendous gains.”

Aguillard earned a bachelor of science in science education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1975, a master’s of education degree in secondary education from USL in 1978, an educational specialist degree in educational administration and supervision in 1982 from USL, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in 1998 from Louisiana State University. He also was a graduate fellow at LSU in 1995 and a LaCEPT Site Coordinator for LSU in 1994.

He has been honored as Louisiana Assistant Principal of the Year and Louisiana Jaycees Educator of the Year.

He was the first Louisiana superintendent invited to join the National Center for Education Research and Technology. He also is a member of numerous other professional organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Louisiana Association of School Executives, Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana, South Central Louisiana Association of School Superintendents and the Louisiana Reading Association/Nicholls Reading Council.

He is a member of the St. Mary Industrial Group and on the board of directors for the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association for the 16th Judicial District. He served as a CASA as well. He is a member of the Franklin Rotary Club and the St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce (Education Committee).

The application period for the job closes tonight at midnight. The board plans to choose a new superintendent by Dec. 7. Current Superintendent Burnell Lemoine’s contract ends Dec. 31.
