SM School Board continues reapportionment discussion

A short workshop on school board district reapportionment was mostly a series of proposed tweaks to proposed lines.

Demographer Mike Hefner met with the board Wednesday to outline the plan he’s developed so far based on 2010 census results.

Hefner worked with board members on a few districts with minor adjustments needed to assure minority voting strength.

He said splitting precincts to add or subtract voters from a certain district was limited to two splits per district.

Districts 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were among those needing slight adjustments to come into compliance.

The board helped Hefner tinker with lines in a few districts, and board member Wayne Deslatte of Centerville mentioned that the current census numbers in the Bayou Vista area might mean it’s time for a 12th district in the school system.

With more than 4,000 persons counted in the Bayou Vista area, Deslatte asked if the rest of the board would agree to allow Hefner to study the possibility of another district.

No one objected, though some members said they didn’t think it would pass voter muster.

Hefner said he would continue to work on the board’s advised adjustments, and present another round sometime in August.
