Single vehicle crash kills Houma man

Houma, La. -- A Houma man was killed after his vehicle went in the water about 2:30 a.m. Friday La. 311 near the Westside Boulevard Extension Bridge in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana State Police Troop C reported in a news release.

The investigation revealed that a 2010 Land Rover was traveling north on La.. 311 in Terrebonne Parish. The Land Rover was being driven by Rory Lyons, 41, of Houma.

As the Land Rover traveled north at a high rate of speed, the vehicle entered a slight left curve in the roadway as it approached the Westside Boulevard Extension Bridge intersection, the report stated. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway where it traveled more than 1,000 feet before striking the south guardrail of the Westside BoulevardExtension Bridge, police stated. Upon impact, the vehicle became airborne and traveled over the roadway and north guardrail, police stated. The vehicle landed in a drainage canal which runs parallel to La. 311, police stated.

Lyons’ body was later discovered by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol after the empty Land Rover was pulled out of the canal.

Lyons was pronounced dead on the scene by a Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office representative.

It is unknown if Lyons was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. After an extensive search, no other occupants were found.

Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending, police stated.

The crash remains under investigation, police stated.
