Short speaks at Bayou Vista Garden Club meeting

Paul “Buddy” Short of Lafayette was Bayou Vista Garden Club guest speaker for its March meeting. His presentation, “Maintaining Tropical Hibiscus in South Louisiana,” focused on six basic categories — information specific to the South Louisiana climate, containers, potting mix, watering, fertilizing and insect control.

Members received handouts summarizing the program. Short is an active member of the National American Hibiscus Society and the local Mike Bernard Acadiana Hibiscus Chapter.

Many of his hibiscus blooms have been selected “Best in Show” and “Best New Introduction” in competitions from Louisiana to Houston. Short donated an Albo Lacinatus hibiscus for a drawing which was won by Jean Chauvin.

The horticulture exhibit tomato specimen and data sheets on tomatoes were provided by club Horticulture Chairman Pam Breaux. Hints included selecting several varieties which will ripen at different times to extend the season and that planting plants with a few inches of stem covered will result in more roots to make plants more secure.

A tomato plant drawing was won by Janice Verret. Breaux also donated pink grapefruit from her tree to be distributed. The horticulture program concluded with a member plant exchange.

The floral design, “Snap Into Spring,” was constructed by a collaboration of March hostesses Jeannie Lawrence, Verdie Laws and Marge Williams. Components of the artistic mass design were multi-color snapdragons, bridal wreath, asparagus fern and lily foliage. The base of the vase was filled with pastel jelly beans.

The tulip plant door prize winner was Jean Chauvin. Bayou Vista Garden Club’s next meeting is April 8 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. New members are welcome.
