Shooting suspect surrenders to MCPD

The man wanted for a Second Street shooting turned himself in to authorities Monday afternoon.

Jeremy Herron, 31, of Sparrow Street in Labadieville was arrested at 1:18 p.m., charged on warrants for attempted second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police records indicate he has a history of violent arrests stretching more than a decade and extending across southern Louisiana.

Chief Marc Folse said Herron remained incarcerated this morning in lieu of a $300,000 bond.

Warrants were issued for Herron after he shot a 54-year-old man in the arm around 3:38 p.m. Sunday following an altercation, Folse said.

The victim, who knew the shooter, was treated and released from Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City.

Kurt Wiggins, 30, of Morgan City was arrested Monday at 11:09 a.m. on a charge with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers were dispatched to the Roderick Street playground located under the elevated section of the U.S. 90 bridge to investigate a report of two subjects smoking marijuana.

Folse said the officers located Wiggins and a female near the playground. Upon their approach, they were given a portion of a suspected marijuana plant that had been recovered by an off-duty St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputy, Folse said.

The deputy stated that he had observed Wiggins and the female in the playground area. Upon his approach, he observed Wiggins throw the marijuana to the ground. Wiggins stated that he was preparing it to smoke. Officers also located a pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana on the ground where Wiggins was standing. He stated that he had just left from the St. Mary Drug Counseling Center, which is located on Roderick Street, and went to the playground to smoke, the chief said.

While most playgrounds within the city limits are included in the ordinance that increases penalties for possessing drugs in school zones and playgrounds, this particular park is not included in that ordinance, Folse said.

Wiggins was arrested, booked and incarcerated with a bond set $1364. The female was not charged and was allowed to leave.

In Patterson, Michael Torres, 20, of Gabriel Street in Patterson was charged at 1:24 a.m. today with first offense driving while intoxicated and general speed law violation after a high speed chase was initiated on Catherine Street, according to Chief Patrick LaSalle.

After an officer observed Torres’ vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the 25 mph speed zone, he initiated a traffic stop, but Torres continued through St. Peter and Gabriel streets before obeying the officer’s order. When tested, Torres was found to have a blood alcohol content of .207 grams-percent, LaSalle said.

Torres remained incarcerated this morning with no bond set.
