School board adopts redistricting plan

CENTERVILLE — The St. Mary Parish School Board adopted its redistricting plan Thursday.
No comments were received concerning the matter during either the public hearing or the regular board meeting when the matter was adopted.
After several months of discussion and four versions of the plan, it was an anticlimactic conclusion.
Among the highlights in Plan 4:
—District 4 is expanded a bit to include incumbent Murphy Pontiff in his district, something none of the other plans accomplish.
—District 7 is confined again to the Centerville and Verdunville areas. In previous plans it was pushed into Patterson.
—Districts 5 and 6 are contained in Patterson. In other versions of the plan, they were pushed into western reaches of the parish or the Patterson area was divided among several more districts.
—District 3, currently represented by Ed Payton of Baldwin, now breaks across the top of the parish and encompasses everything north of Bayou Teche from the western parish line to the Atchafalaya River.
In unrelated action, the board learned sales tax collections continue to trail budget predictions after the first six months of the fiscal year. Actual collections for the year are $8.3 million, which is nearly 7 percent below the $8.9 million budgeted.
For the month of December, collections lagged 2.4 percent behind budget predictions. Actual collections were $1.36 million.
In other action, the board:
—Revoked a resolution authorizing the sale of the Thomas Gibbs school property after one of the three governmental entities preparing to purchase it backed out.
—Approved the renaming of the semi-circle drive at Franklin Junior High School in honor of Coach O’Neal Chube.
—Called a District 1 Maintenance Committee meeting for Feb. 9 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss the air conditioning system at Franklin High School.
—Learned recommendations for property insurance will be presented at the March meeting and worker’s compensation insurance at the April meeting.
—Approved various personnel appointments, transfers and new hires.
