Road improvements in MC hit new phase

Morgan City is preparing to advertise for bids to complete several new roads within the city limits, according to Public Works Director Michael Loupe.

He said the city is preparing to advertise for bids to repair and/or improve two more sets of roads in new phases of work to be paid from the 12-year, 0.3 percent sales tax.

The tax was passed “to be used for paying the cost of constructing, improving, resurfacing, maintaining and providing street drainage for public streets, alleys, sidewalks and public wharves, and acquiring equipment therefor, and for making all necessary payments in connection with bonds or other obligations issued for the above stated purposes,” according to the Morgan City Sales Tax Proposition, which was passed by city residents Nov. 19.

Loupe said Phase 5 will include the concrete patching of Filmore, Cottonwood, Ida, Elk, Dale, Redwood and Victor II streets and boulevards.

Phase 6 includes the asphalt paving of the entire length of Victor II from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to La. 70.

Projected costs for the latest two phases of the city’s road improvement project were not immediately available. They will be advertised for bidding for 25 days, then will go before the council in August for final approval.

Loupe said work should begin in late August or September.

“Everything is going really well,” he said. “After we complete the asphalting of Victor II, the city will make a determination as to what to do with the remainder of the road improvement funds. We are pleased because we are getting a lot of roads done.”

The public works director said Phase 4, improvements to Federal Avenue, is also nearing completion.

Loupe said the $544,532 project was bid out to Barriere Construction and should be complete within the next 60 days.
