Many special observances and events were held Sunday commemorating the lives lost during the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, which collapsed the World Trade Center towers in New York City, damaged the Pentagon in Virginia and crashed an airplane in Pennsylvania that was intended to destroy the U.S. Capitol. One ongoing memorial that saw a lot of traffic on the 9-11 anniversary was the Remembrance Field of Honor in Battery Park, New York City, where a flag is posted for each life lost on 9-11; each flag bears the names of victims written in the stripes. The missing World Trade Center towers are still commemorated, below, by twin beams of light from their former site, now known as Ground Zero.
