Red Ribbon slogan, drawing contest winners announced

Winners have been announced in the St. Mary Red Ribbon Committee’s annual slogan and drawing contests.

Dwaylen Spain, a junior at West St. Mary High School, was the winner of the slogan contest. His slogan will lead the 2013 Red Ribbon Campaign here in St. Mary Parish: “Keep your balance; don’t waste your talents. Be Drug-Free!”

Dwaylen will be presented with a certificate and a $75 check at the May meeting of the St. Mary Parish School Board

Hundreds of drawings were submitted for this year’s contest, according to Safe and Drug Free Schools organizer Diane Wiltz.

Kristin Theriot, a seventh-grade student at Berwick Junior High earned grand champion honors. Her drawing will be featured on the front of the 2013 Red Ribbon Campaign T-shirts, the cover of the annual tabloid as well as the cover of the Red Ribbon calendar and also on the lapel ribbons that are worn during the observance of Red Ribbon Week.

Kristin will be presented a framed reproduction of her drawing, a certificate and a $100 check at the May school board meeting.

Twelve other drawings were also selected as winners and will be featured in the 2013-14 Red Ribbon calendar:

Rodney Colbert, eighth grade, Franklin Junior High School.

Madelyn Harrington, fifth grade, Patterson Junior High School

Alivia Crappell, first grade, Berwick Elementary School

Aiyana Brent, ninth grade, Franklin High School

Shannon Owens, adult, Bayou Vista (Para)

Emma Grace Clements, second grade, St. John Elementary School

Terrance Matthews, ninth grade, West St. Mary High School

Aidan Bennett, sixth grade, Berwick Junior High School

Annabel Picard, twelfth grade, Franklin High School

JaQuinton Washington, sixth grade, Patterson Junior High School

Tania Boudreaux, tenth grade, Franklin High School

Emily Roger, fifth grade, St. John Elementary School.

All of the winners will be presented with a framed reproduction of their winning drawing and a certificate at the May school board meeting.
