Quachita Christian turn back Hanson Lady Tigers

Quachita Christian went from long ball to small ball in earning a 6-2 State Class A regional victory over the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers Friday at the HMS Girls Softball Complex.

Quachita Christian’s Hannah Cobb belted a pair of solo homers to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. The Lady Eagles manufactured three runs in the top half of the sixth inning to grab a 5-2 lead, breaking a 2-2 knot. Cobb crossed home plate in the top half of the sixth inning to give the Lady Eagles the 6-2 regional win.

Hanson Coach Theresa Lombardo praised her team on a great season.

“We had a great season,” she said. “They (Quachita Christian) were not a 15 seeded team. They were probably a Top 5 team of which you don’t normally see the quarterfinals.”

Coach Lombardo had to mix up her starting lineup with senior Mallory Chaisson nursing an injury and having to take on the DH role.

Hanson Memorial fought back from the 2-0 deficit to knot the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the fifth frame.

Lady Tiger Paige Diamond led off the fifth with a single to right before Emily Sonnier walked, putting runners at second and first. Macy Simoneaux’s sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position. Lexi Coleman knotted the game at 2-2 with her 2-RBI double which plated both Diamond and Sonnier, tying the game at 2-2.

The Lady Eagles struck for three runs in the top half of the sixth frame to gain a 5-2 lead of which they never relinquished.

McKenzie Simmons led off the inning with a single before winning pitcher Carly Thaxton helped her own cause with a single. Holly Tyler a grounder which enabled Simmons to score the go-ahead run from third. Callie Teekel lined an RBI single before Ashton Chrown laid down a bunt single, giving the Lady Eagles a 5-2 lead in the sixth.

Cobb, who ripped a solo homer in both the first and fifth frames, scored the final run as she walked to first base and later tagged home plate to give the Lady Eagles a 6-2 victory.

Hanson’s Evelyn Pontiff and Emily Champagne saw mound duties for the Lady Tigers. Pontiff worked three frames, giving up one run on two hits. Champagne pitched the final four innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Leading hitters for the Lady Tigers were: Lexi Coleman, 1 for 3, double, 2 RBI; Brittany Broussard, 1 for 3; Kim Sonnier, 1 for 3, run; Paige Diamond, 1 for 3, run and Katie Sonnier, 1 for 3.

Hanson Memorial finished the season at 17-4 with a first round 10-0 victory over Ecole Classique.
