Program to give designation to healthy businesses
BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana is launching a new statewide health initiative to give a special designation to schools, businesses and organizations deemed to be making healthy choices.
Gov. Bobby Jindal and state health officials announced the “Well-Ahead Louisiana” program Monday. The state health department will designate places as “WellSpots” if they meet certain criteria. Those that earn the designation will get special signage.
To earn the designation, businesses and organizations must be smoke-free in addition to meeting other place-specific criteria. For schools, the criteria include healthy food options and time for late students to eat breakfast, among other items.
The voluntary project is designed to help combat obesity and other health problems in one of the nation’s unhealthiest states. The designation doesn’t carry any financial reward from the state.
