Parish warns against removing flood baskets

St. Mary Drainage District No. 6 held a special meeting Thursday at the Amelia Volunteer Fire Department.

Many Amelia residents would like to remove the flood protection baskets that were placed in the area during high water.

During the district’s monthly meeting on Monday the board may pass a resolution authorizing the removal of flood protection baskets if they are interfering with drainage and blocking resident’s driveways.

St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin Jr. urges residents not to remove the baskets themselves.

If residents do remove baskets, there is a fine of $350 per 15-foot section.

If business owners or residents would like Hesco baskets removed, they must contact Leroy Breaux, 631-2683, the chairman of the drainage board.

St. Mary Drainage District No. 6 will meet again Monday at 6 p.m. at the Amelia Volunteer Fire Department.
