Parish council approves resolutions in quick meet
Members of the St. Mary Parish Council made quick work of a light agenda for their regular meeting Wednesday in Franklin.
The council approved resolutions on the call of tax renewal elections by Gravity Sub-Drainage District 1 of the Gravity Drainage District 2 of 9.95 mills and the Wax Lake East Drainage District of 3.2 mills on Saturday, Oct. 19; a cooperative endeavor agreement with the Department of Transportation and Development on the donation of reclaimed asphalt pavement; a contract with the lowest bidder, Acadiane’ Renovations, on the replacement of courthouse boilers; a notice of substantial completion on exterior improvements on the Blevins building in Franklin by Naquin’s Painting and Waterproofing Inc.; and agreements with the Federal Emergency Management Agency on the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant program for the Hazard Mitigation Plan update and the elevation of a structure under same.
A financial assistance request from the Save Our Children Mentoring Program in the amount of $25,000 for training, educational experience, academic field trips, materials and supplies was referred to finance committee.
The council agreed to provide up to $3,000 toward the purchase of a new van to transport veterans to VA medical appointments out of town. American Legion Post 532 Commander Phelo “Joe” Keller said a $15,000 grant from Disabled American Veterans is available to help purchase the $24,164 van. Allocations have also been promised in the amounts of $2,500 from the City of Franklin, $1,500 from the towns of Berwick and Patterson and $500 from the Town of Baldwin.
Also approved were reallocation requests by Councilman Lionel Metz from the Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10 three-tenths sales tax fund in the amounts of $5,000 to Recreation District 5 for its summer youth program and $1,000 to the Town of Baldwin for Little League.
Board of director appointments included Jane S. Luke to the Library Board of Control; Johnny Sutton and Eva Rawlins to Fire Protection District 11; and Wilson E. Judice and Alton L. Broussard Jr. to Fire Protection District 2.
Parish President Paul Naquin and Councilman Ken Singleton of Patterson were absent.
