Panthers win on the road against Kaplan

The Berwick Panthers scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the sixth on their way to a 5-2 District 9-3A road victory against Kaplan Thursday.
The Panthers pounded out 10 hits in the victory, while pitcher Nick Duthu kept the Pirate hitters in check. In the complete game victory, Duthu surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked two and struck out eight.
Berwick began the game with three runs in the top of the first inning, and Kaplan responded with two in the bottom of the frame.
From there, both teams went scoreless until the top of the sixth when Berwick plated two more.
At the plate, Duthu led Berwick with a 3-for-3 performance with a double and two RBI, while Nick Osburn also went 3-for-3 with a double.
Other BHS hitters included Reed Leonard, 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Brooks Richard and Anthony Richard, each 1-for-4.
The Panthers (18-7 overall, 6-2 in district) will return to action Saturday when they continue District 9-3A play with a road trip to Abbeville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
In other local baseball action this weekend, Patterson will host Franklin today at 5:30 p.m. in District 9-3A play, Morgan City will play Vandebilt in Houma at 2 p.m. Saturday in a District 8-4A matchup and Central Catholic will host Delcambre in a non-district matchup in Amelia at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
