Panthers, Lady Panthers fall at home

From Staff Reports

Berwick High School’s boys’ and girls’ squads both fell to Catholic High-New Iberia on Tuesday at home.

The boys’ fell to Catholic High, 50-29, while the girls’ squad lost, 46-42.

In boys’ action, a big first quarter by Catholic High hurt the Panthers as they jumped out to a 19-3 lead after one period of play.

CHNI outscored the Panthers, 9-4, in the second quarter for a 28-7 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Catholic High added to its lead, outscoring the Panthers’, 13-7, while Berwick held the upper hand in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors, 15-9.

“Turnovers early in the game really hurt,” Berwick coach John Menard said. “I think the guys were a little nervous being it was our first home game. Once they settled down I thought we did a good job.”

Devin Tabor led the Panthers with seven points, while Nick Canty and Nick Osburn added five points each. Palmer Cox and Joe Francois each chipped in four, while Chaz Russo and Brian Hernandez added two each.

“We had open looks, but just didn’t make shots,” Menard said. “The coaches did a good job making adjustments, we just have to be able to execute on the floor.”

With the loss, the Panthers slip to 0-4. However, Menard said his team has improved.

“We are a young team with only two seniors, and it is going to take a while to get the system we are putting in. They are working hard and have made improvements since we started in October.”

In girls’ action, the Lady Panthers fell to the visitors from New Iberia, 46-42.

Amber Girard led the Lady Panthers with 15 points, while Abigail Ohlin and Hayleigh Wilkinson added 13 and eight points, respectively.
