Nicholls Players to perform “Romeo and Juliet” March 15-18

Nicholls State University’s acting troupe, the Nicholls Players, will offer four public performances of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” in mid-March. Edited and adapted by David Hundsness and directed by faculty member Daniel Ruiz, the production will offer a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s story.

“This version keeps Shakespeare’s language intact but cuts the play into a manageable 100 minutes of fast-paced action,” Ruiz said. “Performed by a well-trained cast of Nicholls students, faculty and alumni, the production will feature a contemporary vision of the classic text that will be sure to keep the attention of younger viewers. For example, in this version, the characters of Montague and Capulet are both running for the U.S. Senate. As the election draws near, bitter partisan rivalry reaches a boiling point, causing chaos and civil unrest in their once peaceful Southern city.”

Managed by the Department of Mass Communication, the show will be held in Talbot Theater on the NSU campus in Thibodaux. Productions are slated for 7:30 p.m. March 15-17 and at 3 p.m. March 18.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students with a valid Nicholls ID.

Tickets will be available an hour before the show in the lobby of Talbot Hall, or via reservation, beginning March 14, by calling 985-448-4586. Advance discount rates will be available for groups of 10 or more.
