Morgan City man accused of fire department theft

A Morgan City resident was arrested for theft from the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department, according to Chief James Richard of the Berwick Police Department.

Quincy James Johnson, 18, of Oriole Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 1:04 a.m. today at his residence for illegal possession of stolen things. He is alleged to have possessed five portable radios valued at $1,447 that were missing from the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department. The theft was discovered at 8:49 a.m. Thursday. Berwick police issued a warrant for Johnson’s arrest, and Morgan City police verified that he was at his residence and were on the scene until Berwick police arrived to make the arrest.

One of the radios has been recovered, according to Richard, and Johnson remains in the Berwick jail awaiting transfer to the parish jail in Centerville and is awaiting bail.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office made the following arrests in the eastern part of the parish overnight, according to Sheriff Mark Hebert:

—Thomas Edward Steely Jr., 37, of Front Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 5:31 p.m. Thursday on Onstead Street in Morgan City on a warrant from Assumption Parish for felony theft. He remains jailed with bail not set.

—Luke Wayne Dietz, 49, of Park Village, Kaplan, was arrested at 11:39 p.m. Thursday on La. 182 Frontage Road at Lake Palourde Road in Amelia for lack of obedience to and required traffic control devices, failure to signal, and an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. A deputy patrolling the Amelia area observed the driver of a vehicle make an illegal turn and fail to signal another turn. The deputy conducted a traffic stop during which he observed a bottle of beer in plain view inside the vehicle. Dietz was released on a summons to appear in court in January. Dietz had a friend come and pick up the vehicle to drive him to his destination.

The Morgan City Police Department reports the following arrests overnight, according to Assistant Chief Glenn Blanco:

—Jacob Klenert, 18, of Teche Road, Morgan City, was arrested at 2:24 p.m. Thursday for probation violation. He remains jailed with a $5,000 bail.

—Destiny Edwards, 24, of Freeman Street, Patterson, was arrested at 7:39 p.m. Thursday for driving without working headlights, a child restraint violation, driving without a license and a hold from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. An officer on patrol observed a vehicle in the area of Orange Street and Federal Avenue being operated with only one working headlight. The vehicle was stopped and a driving history check revealed she had no license, the report stated. The officer also observed a child in the rear seat restrained only by the seat belt and not in a child safety seat. A warrant check revealed a warrant from the sheriff’s office for failure to appear for possession of marijuana. She was arrested and jailed with a $547 bail.
