Morgan City High’s associate coach vying for head football job

MORGAN CITY, La. -- The associate head coach of Morgan City High School’s football team is one of six applicants for the H.L. Bourgeois head football coaching position.

According to Bayou Preps.com, a section of the Houma Courier and Thibodaux Daily Comet, Morgan City’s Aaron Meyer is among the six candidates whose names were released by the Terrebonne Parish School Board Dec. 10.

Interviews for the job began Friday and continue through early this week. Nason Authement, secondary education supervisor with the Terrebonne Parish School Board, said the new coach would be announced soon after the interviews.

Meyer said he wanted to pursue the job because of the competition, such as Hahnville, Destrehan and East St. John, that H.L. Bourgeois, a 5A school, competes with in district.

However, he said those feelings didn’t mean he was at all knocking the competition in Morgan City’s 4A district or the opportunities he has had here.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here,” he said.

Meyer, in his first year at Morgan City, said he has no animosity toward Morgan City and wasn’t looking to get out “at all costs.”

“I didn’t do too much job searching,” Meyer, who also serves as offensive coordinator for Morgan City’s squad, said. “That opportunity (H.L Bourgeois) was brought to my attention.”

Morgan City head football coach/athletics director Brandon Nowlin said he would do whatever he could to help his assistant get the job.

“One of the reasons why I brought him in was I thought he was a great young coach who had a lot of ability and brought a lot of good things to our program,” Nowlin said. “We wish him the best of luck with whatever opportunities he decides to pursue.”

Last week’s publication of the H.L Bourgeois’ candidates was the second time in a week that a Morgan City football coach’s name has been mentioned as a candidate for another head coaching position in the Lafourche/Terrebonne area.

Two weeks ago, Nowlin was among five candidates interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Central Lafourche.

However, Keith Menard, then-head football coach at Catholic High-New Iberia, was announced as the head coach, last week.

Nowlin, who could not be reached for comment for an article about the coaching search, issued the following statement Monday: “I was contacted by the administration at Central Lafourche High School about their head football coaching position a few weeks ago. It is always very humbling to be acknowledged or sought after for what you are doing in your profession. I felt I owed it to myself and the people who care about me to investigate the opportunity. Our talks were very preliminary in nature, and in the end, it just was not the right fit. I wish them the best with their transition, but right now, I am strictly focused on my players and duties as the head football coach here at Morgan City High School.”
