Morgan City clinches district title; SMC wins
MORGAN CITY — The Morgan City 10U All-Stars concluded its District 3 AAA contest Wednesday like it had every other game during the tournament. With a win.
Morgan City capped a perfect 4-0 mark in district action with a 6-0 win against Thibodaux Wednesday to clinch the district championship and advance to the South Regional, which begins July 19 in Sulphur.
Morgan City’s win allowed Franklin, who despite falling to St. Mary Central 5-1 in the nightcap of Wednesday’s action, to advance in Triple AAA play also. Although Thibodaux and Franklin both concluded the tournament with 2-2 marks, Franklin held the tie breaker because of an 8-0 win against Thibodaux Tuesday evening. Franklin will travel to the North Regional in Vidalia, which also begins July 19.
As for Morgan City, during its impressive tournament run, the squad recorded shut outs in three of its four contests.
Morgan City’s defense and pitcher Trent Hillen were responsible for the latest on Wednesday as Hillen tossed a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts. He also walked three in six innings.
Hillen also finished 1-for-3 with a triple.
Morgan City struck for two runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and another in the sixth for the win.
Hugh Hamer finished 3-for-4 for Morgan City, while Jackson Butler was 1-for-1; Luke Freia, 1-for-2; Gunnar Theriot, 1-for-3; and Matthew Mire, 1-for-4.
St. Mary Central wins
St. Mary Central finished the district tournament on a positive note with a 5-1 win against Franklin Wednesday.
Grant Hebert tossed a complete-game three-hitter in the win for St. Mary Central, who had dropped its first three games of the tournament during the weekend. In six innings Wednesday, Hebert fanned seven and walked two.
St. Mary Central scored all of its runs in the third inning, overcoming a 1-0 deficit.
Kyle Valdez finished 2-for-2 with a double, while Clay Menard was 2-for-3. Other hitters included Ross Thomas, 1-for-1; and Parker Kulka, 1-for-3.
