Morgan City advances to Tiger Classic title game

MORGAN CITY — Morgan City High School advanced to the Tiger Classic finals with a 55-48 victory against Terrebonne Tuesday.

Morgan City raced out to a 20-11 first-quarter advantage and led 31-24 at the half.

Terrebonne got back in the game in the third quarter as it outscored the Tigers, 11-5, to cut their deficit to 36-35 after three quarters, but the Tigers outscored their opponents from Terrebonne Parish, 19-13, in the fourth quarter for the 55-48 victory.

Tyrin Watts led Morgan City with 19 points, while Jaylen Jones added 14. Other Morgan City scorers included Malcolm Watkins with nine points, Buddy

Humphrey had four points, and Brady Fryou, three.

The Tigers will now face South Lafourche today at 6:30 p.m. at MCHS’ multi-purpose building. South Lafourche defeated Ellender 51-46 in the other winner’s bracket game.

In other action Tuesday, Centerville eliminated Franklin, while Jeanerette eliminated

West St. Mary. Centerville and Jeanerette will meet at 3 p.m. today in the multi-purpose building for the consolation championship.

Ellender and Terrebonne will meet at 5 p.m. for third place.

Berwick boys split games

The Berwick boys’ basketball squad split its games on the first two days of the Ascension Episcopal Tournament.

On Monday, Berwick defeated Erath, 45-42, while on Tuesday, the squad lost to Ascension Episcopal, 44-20.

In Monday’s win, Palmer Cox had 15 points, Nick Osburn, 13 and Nick Canty, eight.

“(We) really played well as a team,” Berwick coach Andy Walker said. “(We) really

played great on defense.”

Walker noted the squad got good play off the bench from V.C. Caruso.

Against Ascension Episcopal, Walker said his squad played hard, but couldn’t recover from a slow start.

Chaz Russo had eight points in the loss, while Canty added six.

The squad will continue play in the tournament tonight when they play Episcopal

School of Acadiana at 6 p.m.

Berwick girls fall

The Berwick Lady Panthers dropped two games at the Catholic High of New Iberia


The Lady Panthers fell to Catholic High of New Iberia, 42-17, while on Tuesday they

fell to Hanson, 39-16.

Abigail Ohlin led the squad in both games, with nine points against Catholic High and eight against Hanson.

Morgan City falls at Thibodaux

The Morgan City Lady Tigers dropped their season opener Tuesday on the road at Thibodaux, 64-28.

Casey Chenevert led Morgan City with nine points, while Tammy Nguyen and Meya

Morse had five and four points, respectively.

The Lady Tigers will return to action Friday on the road against Lutcher before continuing play this weekend in the L.B. Landry Tournament.
