Mitchell speaks at West St. Mary Fall Sports Banquet

BALDWIN — Former Westgate Tiger and LSU Tiger Jared Mitchell served as guest speaker at the West St. Mary High School Fall Sports Banquet held Monday at the WSM Cafeteria.

Mitchell, a member of both the football and baseball National Championship Teams with the Louisiana State University Tigers, is currently with the Chicago White Sox organization.

Mitchell, who spent time recovery from a torn tendon in his ankle, reminded the West St. Mary athletes to keep growing every day and to love family, believe in God and respect teammates.

Mitchell stated that the keys to the two national championship teams at LSU was the chemistry of the players.

“In the two National Championship teams at LSU, we were a group of brothers who loved being around each other and playing with each other,” Mitchell stated. “Enjoy your friends, have fun, live in the moment and enjoy this time and life will be fulfulling.”

The West St. Mary Wolfpack coaches honored the volleyball and football teams during Monday’s banquet. The Wolfpack volleyball and football teams are coming off successful seasons with both earning playoff berths.

West St. Mary Wolfpack 2011 Track and Field State Champions Dai Juan Stewart and Jerald Hawkins were honored with State Championship rings in opening the festive ceremony.

West St. Mary Athletic Director/Head Football Coach fulfilled a promise by presenting both state champions with rings. Stewart, who was the state champion in the 300-meter hurdles, was presented his state championship ring. Stewart, who has committed to SMU, was also the Region 2-3A MVP, District 6-3A MVP, and the state runnerup 110-meter hurdler.

Hawkins, who has committed to LSU, was the state Class 3-A champion in the shot put.

The top recipients in the 2011 West St. Mary Volleyball team were: Chelsee Connor, Most Improved; Gentrell Wells, Coaches Award; Sequoya Ferguson, Offensive Most Valuable Player; Launa Metz, Team Captain, Academic All State, All-District and Best of the Teche; Ron’ Antra’Nique Moore, Coaches Award; Gerianna Lyons, Defensive Most Valuable Player, Second Team All-District, Best of Teche; Gabrielle Darden, Academic Award, Most Improved; Taylor Clavelle, Coaches Award and Sabrina Charatain, Wolfpack Pride.
