Metz, Tillman, France and Bowers are 2012 West St. Mary High top graduates
Four top graduates will lead the West St. Mary High School Class of 2012 during commencement exercises at 6 p.m. tonight in the school gymnasium.
The top grads are Launa Metz, Jontrey Tillman, Nathaniel France and Kelly Bowers.
Launa Metz is the daughter of Lionel and Velda Metz and will graduate with a 4.00 grade point average. While a student at West St. Mary, she served as the freshman and junior class president, was a member of the volleyball, softball, and track teams, was captain of the Cheerleading Squad, and an active member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Educational Talent Search, Literary Rally Team, Renaissance, Future Business Leaders of America and French Club.
She will attend Xavier University to major in business management. She has been awarded a tuition scholarship valued at $32,500 for four years. She is also the recipient of the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce scholarship, Alpha Kalpa Alpha Inc. Eta Chi Omega scholarship, and the St. Mary Parish Principals’ Scholarship.
Jontrey Tillman is the son of Paulette Tillman of Baldwin. He has maintained a 3.9688 cumulative grade point average. While at West St. Mary High School, he was a part of the football team for four years, the basketball team for three years, the track and field team for four years and the baseball team for two years. He was also in the French Club, Literary Rally Team, Renaissance Club, Student Council, Educational Talent Search, National Honor Society, and a Student of the Year nominee. He has received honors such as First Team All-State Academic for football (2011), basketball (2012), and track and field (2012), Second Team LWCA 2A All-State Football Team (2011), First Team Best of the Teche for football (2010, 2011), First Team All District Football Team (2009, 2010, 2011).
Jontrey will attend the University of Houston on a full football scholarship in the fall, and major in mechanical engineering.
Nathaniel France, the son of Noel France and Natalie Jimenez, is graduating with a 3.8065 grade point average. While a student at WSM, Nathaniel was an active member of the National Honor Society, played baseball and was captain of the Quiz Bowl Team for two years. Nathaniel was also Student of the Month multiple times and was nominated as a candidate for Student of the Year.
He plans on attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles on a full scholarship to major in mechanical engineering. After college, Nathaniel plans to enlist in the Navy as a nuclear officer or into the Air Force as a combat pilot.
Kelly Bowers is the son of Diane White-Bowers and Kenneth Bowers, and will graduate with a 3.7812 grade point average. While a student at West St. Mary High School, Kelly was active in his school’s Future Business Leaders of America club where he was a voting delegate for three years. Also he is a member of National Honor Society where he is the vice president. He was also a member of the Literary Rally Team for four years, a member of his school’s track team where he ran for four years. He also played on the football team for four years. Bowers was Student of the Month in January 2010 and November 2011. He was awarded the 2011 Wolfpack Award during the 2011 track season. Also he was awarded the Academic All-State Award during the 2011 football season. He was also awarded the Coaches Award and Academic All-State Award for the 2012 track season.
He plans to enlist in the Navy Reserves and attend Louisiana State University to major in microbiology. After college he plans to go active duty in the U.S. Navy.
