Meeting to save Post 63 slated

Past and present American Legion members, Auxiliary members and all U.S. military veterans are urged to attend a special meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

The meeting is being called to help formulate a plan to save American Legion Post 63’s charter, which has been in existence for more than 90 years.

The Post headquartered at 1330 Irish Bend Road has experienced financial difficulties after discontinuing its weekly bingo about a year ago.

Post spokesperson Joseph Nowakowski said that decision was made after it became apparent the event was no longer the moneymaker it once was and was actually losing money.

He added that it also became more difficult to enlist volunteers to help run the operation. Many of those who did so for years are no longer able due to factors such as age and physical disabilities, he said.

Funds from bingo were used to send local high school students to Boys and Girls State in Baton Rouge, as well as for other youth activities such as American Legion Baseball.

Nowakowski said it’s imperative to save the charter in order “to do something for the community by continuing those programs.”
