MCHS Tigers open soccer playoffs against South Terrebonne

Just like its girls’ squad, the Morgan City boys soccer team will face a squad they are familiar with when it hosts South Terrebonne tonight at Tiger Stadium in the first round of the Division II boys soccer playoffs.

The Tigers, the 12th seed, and the South Terrebonne Gators, the 21st seed, will meet at 7:30 p.m. following the girls’ matchup between Morgan City and South Terrebonne.

While Morgan City coach Jorge Hernandez said his squad would have to play better defensively to have a good chance to win, it’s Morgan City’s defensive effort that sticks out to South Terrebonne coach Archie Adams.

He said the Morgan City squad does a good job of keeping teams away from the goal.

“They’re quick back there and they don’t give you a lot of opportunities to get shots off,” Adams said.

Hernandez said his squad is ready for the game, and if they come out with the right mental mindset, they should win.

The Tigers (12-10 overall, 4-4 in district play) are entering the playoffs after upsetting Vandebilt Catholic, 1-0, in Houma last week.

“If we beat Vandebilt, we can beat these guys,” Hernandez said of South Terrebonne (5-11, 3-5).

Hernandez said he didn’t mind playing someone he was familiar with and that the game doesn’t feel like the playoffs.

“I’d say this is going to be almost like playing district,” he said.

While location and economically, Adams said the matchup is good, he said it wasn’t good to have to play each other so early.

“It’s never good when you have to eliminate a district team with another district team,” Adams said. “I’m always under the impression that you root for all your district teams in the playoffs. It’s just what you do.”

The winner of tonight’s matchup will face Teurlings Catholic, which received a first-round bye.
